RVing With Dogs on the Texas Coast: Tips for a Happy Pup

Your dog is part of the crew, so of course they're coming along. The Texas coast is a great place to travel with a pup. There's open sky, salty breezes and plenty of new smells. But the heat, sand and wildlife here are different from what many dogs are used to back home.

These tips will help your dog settle in fast and enjoy every day of the trip, whether you're staying a weekend or the whole winter.

Plan Ahead Before You Hit the Road

A little prep at home saves a lot of stress later. Pack a folder with your dog's shot records, including proof of rabies vaccination. Some places ask to see it, and you'll want it handy if you ever need a vet while you're away.

Make sure your dog's collar has a tag with your cell number on it. A microchip is a smart backup, and it only helps if the contact info is current, so check it before you leave.

Here's a quick packing list for your pup:

  • Food for the whole trip, plus a few extra days
  • Collapsible water bowl and a jug of water for the car
  • A sturdy leash and a long lead for camp
  • Poop bags, and more than you think you need
  • A towel for sandy, wet paws
  • Flea, tick and heartworm prevention
  • A familiar bed or blanket so the RV smells like home

Keep Your Dog Cool in the Coastal Heat

The Gulf Coast gets hot and humid for much of the year. Dogs can overheat much faster than people, especially short-nosed breeds, older dogs and pups with thick coats.

Walk early in the morning and again after the sun goes down. Before you head out, press the back of your hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws. Beach sand and shell can get just as hot, and broken shell can be sharp.

Never leave your dog alone in a parked RV or car without the air conditioning running. Even with the windows cracked, the inside can heat up in minutes. Watch for signs of trouble like heavy panting, drooling, stumbling or a bright red tongue. If you see them, move your dog to shade, offer water and call a vet.

Beach Days and Bay Outings

The beaches and parks around Lavaca Bay are fun to explore with a dog. Spots like Magnolia Beach and the shoreline parks in Port Lavaca give your pup room to sniff around. Rules can be different from one place to the next, so check the posted signs before you let your dog off the car seat.

Keep your dog on a leash near the water. The bay is home to lots of shorebirds, and some areas, like the Lighthouse Beach & Bird Sanctuary, are set aside for wildlife. A leashed dog keeps the birds calm and keeps your pup out of trouble.

A few beach-day habits go a long way:

  • Don't let your dog drink salt water. It can upset their stomach fast.
  • Rinse their coat and paws with fresh water after a swim.
  • Watch for fishing hooks, line and crab traps near piers.
  • Bring shade, like an umbrella or pop-up canopy.

Good Camp Manners for Dogs

At an RV park, you have neighbors close by. A well-behaved dog makes the whole stay nicer for everyone, including you. Keep your dog leashed when you're outside your site, and always pick up after them.

Barking is the most common complaint at any campground. If your dog barks when you leave, try short practice trips first, or plan outings where your pup can tag along. A tired dog is a quiet dog, so a good walk before you head out helps a lot.

Give your dog time to adjust to the new place. Set up their bed, bowls and toys in the same spot each day. Keeping meal and walk times close to their home schedule helps them feel safe in a new setting.

Why Texas Lakeside RV Resort Works Well for Dog Owners

At Texas Lakeside RV Resort in Port Lavaca, we have a dog park on site, so your pup has a place to stretch their legs without leaving the property. Our wide paved interior roads and 7 mph speed limit make for calmer walks, too.

When your dog needs a nap, you can take a break at the pool or hot tub, or toss a line in our private stocked fishing lake. Full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service mean you can keep the AC running for your pup on the hottest afternoons.

We welcome weekend travelers, snowbirds and long-term guests, so you can bring your best friend for a few nights or a few months.
