Best Fishing Spots Around Port Lavaca, Texas: Bay, Piers and Jetties

Port Lavaca sits right on Lavaca Bay, and that means you're never far from a good place to fish. You can cast from a lighted pier in town, wade a shallow shoreline, or drive down the coast to the big jetties. And if you stay with us, you can start the morning at a stocked lake without even unhooking the truck.

Here's a local's rundown of the best spots, what you might catch, and a few tips to make the trip easy.

Start at Home: The Resort's Private Stocked Lake

Texas Lakeside RV Resort has its own private fishing lake, and it's stocked. Guests pull catfish and other fish out of it, and it's a nice, low-stress way to fish. There's no boat to launch, no tide chart to check, and no long drive.

It's a great pick for kids who are just learning, for a quick cast before dinner, or for days when the wind is kicking up the bay. Grab your rod, walk over, and see what's biting. Stop by the office if you have questions about the lake before you head out.

Piers and Parks Right in Port Lavaca

You don't need a boat to fish Lavaca Bay. The city has several spots where you can fish from a pier or the bank.

Port Lavaca Causeway Fishing Pier

The causeway pier is a local favorite. It's a long, wide pier that runs out over the bay, and it ends in a lighted T-head. That light matters, because night fishing here can be very good when bait gathers under the lamps.

Bay anglers here often target speckled trout, redfish, black drum and sheepshead. What's biting changes with the season and the tide, so ask around at a local bait shop when you get to town.

Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse Beach has a lighted pier with a shade structure, which is a real treat on hot afternoons. It's part of the same park as the city's bird sanctuary, so you can fish a while and then walk the boardwalk. It also has a boat ramp if you're towing a small boat.

Bayfront Peninsula Park

Bayfront Peninsula Park offers pier fishing, plus bank areas where you can cast from shore. It's an easy spot to try when you want a short outing in town.

Six Mile Park for Wading and Bank Fishing

Six Mile Park is a small, two-acre shoreline park outside of town. It has a lighted pier, boat ramps, a rocky shoreline and a stretch of beach. The bay access here works well for wade fishing, and the marsh nearby draws plenty of birds too.

If you like to wade, bring good shoes for the shell and rock. A stringer or a floating bucket helps, and a long-sleeve sun shirt goes a long way on the open water.

Day Trip: Port O'Connor and the Jetties

Port O'Connor is a small fishing town at the edge of Matagorda Bay, about a 40-minute drive from Port Lavaca. It's known as a year-round fishery. Anglers come for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum and sheepshead.

The rock jetties near Port O'Connor stretch out into the water and hold a lot of fish. Most folks reach them by boat, and plenty of local fishing guides run trips there. If you'd rather stay on land, King Fisher Beach in Port O'Connor has a pier you can fish from.

Timing tip: fall is a big season here. The flounder run usually peaks from October through December, and bull redfish often show up in the fall too.

Licenses, Gear and Quick Tips

If you fish the bay or any public salt water in Texas, you'll need a Texas fishing license with a saltwater endorsement. Anyone 17 or older needs one. You can buy it online from Texas Parks and Wildlife or at many stores that sell fishing gear. Check the current bag and size limits before you keep any fish.

  • Watch the wind. Lavaca Bay can get choppy fast. On windy days, the resort lake or a sheltered pier is a smart call.
  • Fish the edges of the day. Early morning and evening are often best, and lighted piers can stay good after dark.
  • Bring live or fresh bait. Shrimp is a solid all-around choice for bay fish.
  • Pack sun gear. A hat, sunglasses and plenty of water are musts on the coast.
  • Clean up. Take your line and trash with you so the birds and the next angler stay happy.

After a long day out, it's nice to come back to a clean shower, a laundry room and a spot by the pool or hot tub. Our BBQ and picnic areas are a good place to cook up the catch, too.
