Pull-Through vs Back-In RV Sites: How to Pick the Right Site
When you book an RV site, one of the first choices you'll face is pull-through or back-in. It sounds like a small detail. But the right pick can make your arrival easier and your stay more comfortable.
Here's a simple guide to both types of sites, who they work best for, and how to choose the right one for your rig.
What Is a Pull-Through Site?
A pull-through site has an opening at both ends. You drive in from one road and drive out the other side when you leave. There's no backing up at all.
Pull-throughs are popular with big rigs, especially fifth wheels and motorhomes pulling a tow car. In many cases you can stay hooked up to your tow vehicle, which saves time on short stops.
Pros of pull-through sites:
- No backing up, which means less stress on arrival
- Great for long rigs and tow setups
- Faster to set up and leave, ideal for one- or two-night stops
- Easier if you're tired after a long drive or arriving near dark
Cons of pull-through sites:
- They're often in the middle of a park, so views may be limited
- Your neighbors may be closer on each side
- They tend to be popular and can book up first
What Is a Back-In Site?
A back-in site has one way in and one way out. You back your RV into the space, then pull forward when you leave. Many of the best spots in a park are back-ins, because they can face a view instead of a road.
Pros of back-in sites:
- Often face open space or water, so your door and windows look out on something nice
- Can feel more private, with your living area away from the road
- Usually more choices available
- Great for longer stays when you'll only back in once
Cons of back-in sites:
- Backing up takes practice, especially with a trailer
- You'll usually need to unhook a tow car first
- Setup can take a few extra minutes
How to Choose the Right Site for Your Rig
There's no single right answer. It depends on your rig, your trip and your comfort level behind the wheel. Ask yourself these questions.
How long is your full setup?
Measure your RV from bumper to bumper. If you tow a car or pull a trailer, add the tow vehicle too, plus some room for the hitch. Give the park your total length when you book so they can match you with a site that fits.
How long are you staying?
For a quick overnight on the way somewhere else, a pull-through is hard to beat. For a week or a month, a back-in with a nice view often makes more sense. You'll only back in once, and you'll enjoy that view every day.
How do you feel about backing up?
Be honest with yourself. If backing a 40-foot fifth wheel makes your palms sweat, a pull-through can take the pressure off. If you're comfortable, a back-in opens up more options.
Where are your hookups?
Most RVs have their utility hookups on the driver's side. Look at the site layout or ask the office which side the hookups are on. Make sure your cord and hoses will reach without strain.
Tips for Backing In Like a Pro
- Use a spotter. Have someone stand where you can see them in your mirror, not behind the rig.
- Agree on hand signals or use a pair of walkie-talkies so you're not shouting.
- Go slow. Small steering moves make a big difference, especially with a trailer.
- Get out and look. There's no shame in stopping to check. Watch for posts, trees, hookup boxes and overhead branches.
- Take your time. Most RVers have been there. Nobody's grading you.
Wide roads help a lot too. A park with plenty of room to swing out makes backing in much easier.
